It’s Time for You to Feel Grounded, Supported, and Understood
Ali Waltien, M.A.
Clinical Psychologist | Former Child Life Specialist | Vermont
When a medical diagnosis, hospital stay, or loss turns life upside down, it can be hard to find your footing again. My work centers on helping children, parents, and caregivers navigate these life-altering experiences with compassion, understanding, and hope.
As a Clinical Psychologist with a master’s degree in psychology and a background as a Child Life Specialist, I bring over a decade of experience supporting families through the emotional impact of serious illness, grief, and medical trauma. I work with children, teens, and adults, and often help parents navigate the stress and uncertainty that arise when a loved one is ill or recovering.
My therapeutic approach is integrative and relationship-based. Depending on each client’s needs, I may draw from play therapy, expressive techniques, cognitive-behavioral tools, or psychodynamic and client-centered foundations. For families, I emphasize collaborative, family-centered care, creating space for everyone’s voice as we work toward healing together.
I also facilitate support groups, including the Family-Centered Grief Support Group at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC), and offer trainings and presentations for schools, hospitals, and community organizations on supporting children and families impacted by illness, loss, and grief.
My goal is to help each client reconnect with resilience, cultivate self-compassion, and discover steadier ways to move through what feels unmanageable. Therapy with me is collaborative and deeply human: a place where warmth, humor, and honesty can coexist with grief and growth.
Outside of my work, I’m a lifelong learner, tea enthusiast, gardener, and nature seeker. I’m also a mom, wife, sister, daughter, and friend; roles that continually remind me that healing happens in relationships and that courage often begins with small moments of showing up.
